Research, strategy & design

A thinker and a doer

12+ years / 160+ projects

I’m a London-based freelance product designer with 12+ years experience making quite interesting stuff work. I have a very broad and rounded skill-set developed through extensive involvement across research, strategy, design and manufacture disciplines. Most of my focus these days tends to be in and around the creative front-end of projects.

Following a First-class honours degree in furniture and product design (1998–2002) I began my career as a product designer to a number of UK design consultancies. During this period I worked on a variety of projects from kitchen utensils through to servo and motion control drives through to electronic assistive technology devices for the disabled and severely handicapped. My responsibilities spanned concept generation through to detail design and the creation of production-ready data for manufacture.

After a number of years I moved on to join Pearson Matthews, a leading innovation consultancy to the healthcare sector where I was a project manager and lead designer/strategist. I worked within a multi-disciplinary team implementing design, strategic, and R&D projects for clients such as Sanofi Aventis, Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, the Department of Health, and Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare. Whilst here I became increasingly involved in delivering projects with high research and strategy content. I left Pearson Matthews in 2008.

Since freelancing, I have broadened my experience in consumer product design working on projects such as digital cameras, vacuum cleaners, food mixers and mobile phones. In 2011 I was delighted to be invited to become an Associate of Forum for the Future, having regularly worked alongside them since 2008 on a number of sustainability-related innovation projects.

I have worked on projects for the following companies and brands:
